Drinking tea provides plenty of health benefits, but did you know that it is also extremely beneficial when used at home in DIY beauty treatments?

DIY BEAUTY TREATMENTS USING TEA

Self-care has increasingly become recognised as an important way to help manage stress and improve your overall mental health and wellbeing. There are lots of ways that people interpret self-care, whether it is watching your favourite TV program to unwind at night, taking part in a regular yoga class or curling up with a good book. It is acknowledging that we all need time to ourselves to relax and recharge and not to feel guilty when we take part in one of these activities.

Creating and using your own beauty products at home to enjoy is a great way to focus just on you and your needs and provide that much needed time to relax. We take a look at our favourite beauty treatments for you to try.

Green Tea Face Mask

A favourite DIY face mask of the youthful skinned, A-List celebrity, Halle Berry. This recipe promises to brighten, tighten, reduce fine lines and help provide a natural glow.

Ingredients:
  • 2 tbsps. of brewed Green Tea.
  • Pinch of Turmeric powder.
  • ½ tsp. of lemon juice.
  • 65g of plain yoghurt.
Benefits: 
  • Green Tea – Contains vitamins and minerals that prevent premature aging, combat UV damage and de-puffs skin.
  • Turmeric powder – reduces inflammation and deeply nourishes.
  • Lemon – cleanses, brightens and regenerates skin.
  • Yoghurt – lactic acid gently exfoliates and gets rid of dead skin cells.
Method:
  1. Mix all ingredients together and stir vigorously.
  2. Apply a generous coat on face and neck and leave for three minutes.
  3. Add a second coat and leave for a further 10 minutes.
  4. Rinse with cold water.
  5. Apply your usual moisturiser as normal.

Oil-Balancing Black Tea Scrub

This scrub works to balance out oily or acne-prone skin. The use of Black Tea is highly beneficial. It is rich in antioxidants that can help prevent skin damage, fight bacteria, hydrate and nourish. The high level of caffeine reduces puffiness and helps firm your skin. It also helps absorb excess sebum which is why it Is fantastic for oily skin.

Ingredients:
  • 43g of short grain, uncooked rice.
  • 3 tbsps. of strongly steeped Black Tea such as Assam Tippy BOP.
  • 2 tbsps. of maple syrup.
  • Several drops of lemon juice.
Method:
  1. Mix all ingredients together.
  2. Apply to dry problem areas.
  3. Leave on for 3-5 minutes.
  4. Rinse.

Lavender Flowers Foot Soak

This relaxing foot soak uses Epsom salt, essential oils and Lavender Flowers Tea to soothe and soften feet. The benefits of Epsom salts are said to be that they can ease sore feet, reduce swelling and help exfoliate the skin. The divine fragrance of the Lavender is said to help relieve stress and give you a positive boost.

Ingredients:
  • 200g of Epsom Salt.
  • 50g of fragrant loose-leaf tea such as; Lavender Flowers Tea.
  • A few drops of essential oils such as peppermint, lavender or rosemary.
Method:
  1. Combine Epsom Salt, Lavender Flowers Tea and your essential oil of choice in a bowl and mix until its evenly dispersed.
  2. Store in a container with a tightly sealed lid, such as a clip top, glass mason jar, so the fragrance infuses and it stores well for future use.
  3. Add a few scoops to warm running water.
  4. Soak your feet and enjoy! It can also be used as a full soak in a bath.

Whipped Coconut and Green Tea Moisturiser

A coconut oil moisturiser that hydrates without clogging pores. The green tea can help reverse sun damage and prevent wrinkles, as well as acting as an anti-inflammatory and natural astringent to reduce oily skin. Whipping it gives a nice frothy texture that is then easier to apply to your skin.

Ingredients:
Method:
  1. Gently melt the coconut oil in a pan.
  2. Stir in the green tea.
  3. Cover and simmer on lowest heat setting for 1 hour.
  4. Strain tea from oil.
  5. Let cool until almost solid.
  6. Then whip until creamy, 3-5 minutes.

Matcha Green Tea Hair Mask

This hair mask nourishes dry and lacklustre locks. Matcha powder is three times more potent than loose-leaf green tea. Using it in a weekly hair mask, can help stimulate hair growth and create hydrated and shiny hair.

Ingredients:
Method:
  1. Whisk the egg and combine with the coconut oil and matcha powder.
  2. Apply to clean hair, ideally on a weekly basis (Self-care Sunday anyone?).
  3. Using a comb, part hair and apply to roots, slowly working your way over your entire scalp.
  4. Leave on for 30 minutes before shampooing.

Rooibos and Lemon Skin Toner

Rooibos Tea contains strong antioxidants that help protect the skin from environmental elements such as pollution and UV damage. It also has anti-allergic properties to soothe irritated skin and anti-inflammatory properties to calm skin and help fight acne.

Ingredients:
  • 2g of Rooibos Tea (enough to make a cup).
  • ½ tsp of fresh lemon juice.
Method:
  1. Mix the cooled Rooibos Tea with the lemon juice.
  2. Dip cotton wool into the mixture and sweep across your face (avoiding eyes) to tone your skin.
  3. Leave on for 10 minutes.
  4. Rinse with lukewarm water (not too warm) to close pores.
  5. If you have any mixture left, you can store in an airtight container for a week.
